Chapter 1. The Architecture of the Individual and the Prognostica Mens

From Maslow’s Pyramid to the Thermodynamics of the Teleological Dichotomy

If we want to understand the physics of human relations and the origin of any community, we cannot begin by studying society in the abstract. We must perform an operation of conceptual isolation: extract the fundamental particle — the single human being — and study its behavior in a “vacuum” before it collides with others. We must understand the internal engine that drives it to move and consume energy.

For over seventy years, the explanation of human motivations has relied on reassuring but scientifically inaccurate cartographies. Two in particular have dominated pedagogy, economics, and psychology: Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (1943) and Sigmund Freud’s Constancy Principle (1920).

According to Maslow’s theoretical framework, the human being supposedly operates like a tank with watertight compartments that must be filled following a rigid, unidirectional, and cumulative hierarchy. At the base lie the primary physiological needs (nourishment, sleep); only once these are saturated would the individual move to the next level, seeking safety and shelter. Once this step is reached and consolidated, the search for social belonging and affection would activate, then climbing towards the need for esteem and, finally, placing self-actualization and creativity on the unattainable summit. This cartography presupposes a “layered” man, a mechanical creature incapable of higher impulses or abstractions unless a full belly and a safe roof are first guaranteed.

In perfect resonance with this mechanistic vision, classical psychoanalysis implanted another fatal illusion into Western culture, derived from the constancy principle (or Nirvana principle) theorized by Sigmund Freud in his work Beyond the Pleasure Principle. Freud postulated that the psychic apparatus was a device oriented solely toward maintaining the quantity of excitation present within it at the lowest or most constant level possible. Every stimulus, every desire, every ambition, or obstacle is read as a painful “tension” that disturbs the system. Happiness and well-being, from this perspective, become purely “subtractive” concepts: man would be intimately happy only by subtracting difficulties, turning off desires, and zeroing out tensions with the external world to achieve absolute rest, a frictionless inertia.

The Mechanics of Community disintegrates this double construct at its root, opposing it with the evidence of history and the inexorability of biology. The human chronicle demonstrates every day the inconsistency of Maslow’s scale: man is the only living being capable of subverting the pyramid, choosing to starve to death to defend a political ideal, or renouncing his own physical safety and shelter to launch into aesthetic, scientific, or territorial exploration. At the same time, the Freudian illusion of absolute rest violently clashes with the thermodynamics of the nervous system: the total absence of tension does not generate peace, but atrophy and despair.

The human being is not an inert tank waiting to be filled in layers, nor a worn-out machine that merely wishes to shut down. It is a vital, intelligent reactor, inexorably drawn toward the future.

1. Teleological Analysis and the Predictive Engine

To truly understand the architecture of the mind, we must make a radical epistemological leap and abandon the mechanical principle of cause-and-effect — the idea that man is inert matter pushed from behind by past traumas — to embrace teleological analysis (from the Greek telos, purpose/end). We exchange energy with the world solely to reach a goal in the future.

If man’s only biological goal were truly the zeroing of tension and total protection (the Freudian passive homeostasis), the perfect organism would seek refuge in a dark, soundproof room at a constant temperature, canceling any interaction with the unknown.

Neuroscientist Karl Friston (2010), father of the Free Energy Principle, demonstrated that this hypothesis is biologically false. If we lock a man in a sensory deprivation tank, his brain does not “relax” at all: after a few hours it panics, the system enters an entropic crisis, and begins to produce visual and auditory hallucinations to self-stimulate. Why? Because the human brain is not a passive receptor, but a relentless predictive engine (what we define as the Prognostica Mens).

The brain calculates (predicts) reality in advance. If the calculation is wrong (e.g., missing a step in the dark), you feel a visceral jolt: it is the Predictive Error (Δp), the violent discrepancy between the brain’s expectations and material reality. Man spends his entire existence exchanging energy with the environment in an attempt to dominate and minimize this Δp. But where does this primordial predictive algorithm come from? It is not a blank slate at birth.

2. The Primordial Algorithm and the Genesis of Purpose

As we extensively demonstrated in the Introductory Chapter by dismantling constructivism, DNA is not a mere protein sequencer, but a rigorous predictive algorithm that has already solved the problem of our biological vulnerability, pre-wiring us for social topology.

We need not repeat the phenomenology of this evolutionary adaptation here. What interests us in this context — to define the thermodynamics of the isolated individual — is to understand how this “science of interactions” encoded in our hardware translates, moment by moment, into a person’s vital drive.

Once the basic architecture is guaranteed (respiration, reflexes, attachment to the community network for protection), DNA encodes within us the inexhaustible impulse for exploration and action. Knowing that resources in the environment are scarce and perishable, it endows the nervous system with ancient neural circuits, such as the SEEKING system identified by neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp (1998). Our genetic code programs us to be perpetually dissatisfied with inertia: it pushes us to manipulate matter, to build tools, to transform the surrounding environment. Curiosity and ambition are not “bourgeois constructs,” but tools of thermodynamic supremacy over the inanimate universe.

The vital energy of the individual, obeying this ancient purpose-oriented “pre-wiring,” does not climb Maslow’s one-way pyramid, but constantly organizes itself through an ironclad teleological dichotomy (a division of purposes into two opposite directions of flow): the Intrinsic Objective and the Extrinsic Objective.

3. The Teleological Dichotomy: The Universal and the Particular

A. The Intrinsic Objective: The Universal Invariant (Centripetal Flow)

The first operative axis is dominated by a Centripetal Flow: energy is oriented inwards, toward the conservation of the subject. The Intrinsic Objective is identical for every human being. It coincides with self-protection and the restoration of basic homeostasis. Broken down into non-negotiable sub-objectives, it concerns biological survival (eating, sleeping), neurological stability (lowering cortisol), and affective protection.

It is exactly in this flow that the individual responds to the call of social topology: since the genetic algorithm has calculated that the only efficient topological geometry to dissipate anxiety (Predictive Error, Δp) is horizontal cooperation and a healthy vertical leadership, the individual Intrinsic Objective is realized solely by interlocking within the healthy structure of the primary community. When these centripetal sub-objectives are satisfied, the body accumulates an invaluable Thermodynamic Surplus. The stored energy must now be unleashed.

B. The Extrinsic Objective: The Matrix of Diversity (Centrifugal Flow)

Once internal security is achieved, the energy flow violently reverses its polarity, becoming a Centrifugal Flow: energy radiates outwards to dominate the world. As we mentioned citing Panksepp, once survival is guaranteed, the healthy organism does not shut down: it voluntarily generates controlled predictive micro-errors. Man throws himself into the external world, generating obstacles to experience the thrill of overcoming them, consuming energy to expand his dominion over the “Discontinuum” (reality). This apparent energy waste is actually a vital teleological investment: by exposing himself to measured obstacles, the individual trains and strengthens his predictive engine against future unforeseen events.

If the Intrinsic Objective makes us all equal, the Extrinsic Objective is what radically differentiates us from one another. It is the signature of personal identity and talent. This expansive axis can be structured in two distinct ways:

  • A single macro-objective divided into sequential sub-objectives: Imagine a boy whose only, monolithic Extrinsic Objective is “to become a world-renowned neurosurgeon.” This colossal goal is broken down into chronological and inflexible stages: passing the medical exam, graduating with honors, winning the residency. All his centrifugal energy is channeled like a laser beam.
  • A set of multiple, parallel extrinsic objectives: Imagine a “multifaceted” individual who simultaneously aims to found a startup, play the cello competitively, and write a novel. His energy is divided across multiple fronts to map different portions of reality.

4. Essence as a Limit and Dynamic Vector

If man blindly obeyed the extrinsic centrifugal drive, he would self-destruct in a few days from sheer physical exhaustion. Contemporary motivational culture constantly repeats the toxic and anti-scientific fable of “if you want to, you can,” as if merely declaring a goal were enough to achieve it, ignoring the ruthless laws of physics and biology.

Dreams, ambitions, and Extrinsic Objectives do not float in a magical dimension: they collide head-on with the hardness of the Reality Constraint. The totality of the muscular, cognitive, intellectual, emotional, and technical competencies that an individual actually possesses (hic et nunc, here and now) is not a linguistic construct. It is an absolute physical magnitude. This material measurement of a person’s “engine” at a given moment constitutes their Essence (E).

Essence (E) is not a social label, but the first parameter of the relational equation. Explanatory example: If a sixty-year-old clerk who smokes two packs of cigarettes a day (his current Essence) suddenly sets himself the extrinsic macro-objective of climbing Mount Everest without oxygen, his system will meet death. His muscles and lungs are materially unable to sustain that massive Centrifugal Flow. He lacks the necessary hardware. This attempt is not audacity: it is thermodynamic suicide.

However, rejecting “magical thinking” does not mean falling into pure biological determinism (the idea that human capabilities are carved in stone at birth and immovable). Modern neuroscience has demonstrated the existence of Neuroplasticity: the human brain and body are plastic, capable of wiring new circuits and modifying hormonal responses through repeated experience. Human Essence is, by its nature, an expandable dynamic vector.

The difference lies in the Time factor and the Thermodynamic Cost. The individual in the previous example can climb a mountain by expanding his own Essence (E) to make it compatible with that goal. But this expansion requires thermodynamic work: three years of deliberate training, muscular fatigue, strict diets, and the slow reconstruction of his cardiovascular circuits. The boundary of Essence moves forward only by paying the price of biological sweat. The vital bridge of salvation is called Awareness: the diagnostic ability to ruthlessly map one’s current Essence (E) and to establish Extrinsic Objectives that are thermodynamically compatible.

5. Fractal Isomorphism and the Dichotomy of Community

Having clarified how the teleological architecture works in the isolated individual, we now have the “Rosetta Stone” to decode the behavior and collapses of entire civilizations.

When an individual binds with other individuals, a mystical or alien organism is not born. A leap in scale occurs, governed by a precise geometric law: Fractal Isomorphism. Just as a matryoshka doll reproduces the exact same shape on increasingly larger dimensional scales, the new Community (a network of relations) inherits, down to the millimeter, the same dichotomous structure of the isolated human atom:

  • The Community’s Intrinsic Objective (The Centripetal Flow of the Group): This goal is identical and universal for any healthy community. Whether it is a football team, a company, or a Nation, the Intrinsic Objective is the protection, balance, and well-being of all the nodes in the network. Example: For a State, the intrinsic sub-objectives are public healthcare, law enforcement for internal peace, and welfare. If a State lets its citizens die of crime (or if a company squeezes its employees into depression), the community fails its centripetal flow and severs the Intrinsic Objective, transforming into an Empty Machine.
  • The Community’s Extrinsic Objective (Operational Diversity): This is what absolutely differentiates one organization from another. Example: A pediatric hospital aims to defeat childhood diseases; a car factory aims to dominate the transport market.

The sovereign law governing these ecosystems establishes that a group’s Extrinsic Objective must always be the exact derivative of the actual aggregate competencies (the Collective Essence) of its members. Setting unrealistic goals disintegrates the foundations of the social machine.

6. The Horizon of Friction: The Price of Interlocking

If the architecture ended here, social aggregation would seem an achieved utopia. Yet, multinational companies fail, marriages crumble in resentment, citizens rebel, hospitals implode. Why does this fractal perfection often crumple upon itself?

The answer lies on the threshold of the transition from a single individual to society. The entry of an individual into a macro-structure demands the payment of an extremely severe physical and geometric toll. For a community to function in a synchronized and efficient manner, it cannot afford to accommodate the pure and free Essence (E) of the individual, leaving him free to explore his instinctual emotions.

To coordinate energy, the community must take the individual’s Essence and assign it a delimited space. It must build an ironclad architectural mold into which the individual must literally “interlock”: the Role (R).

It is here that the greatest modern sociological illusion resides: believing that the Role is an artificial and cultural constraint invented by the powerful. As we will see in the next chapter, the Role is the biological interface foreseen by our very own DNA. It is the natural “socket” without which the individual’s energy could never illuminate the community network.

However, it is at the exact moment when this interlocking occurs that the human atom ceases to be free and collides with the destructive potential of Social Geometry. We are not facing a peaceful alliance, but the entry into a pressure reactor. When the shapes do not match and the pressure of expectations rises, energy does not transform into work, but converts into the fire of friction.
