The Executive Architecture of the Mind: The Hierarchy of Operating Systems (OSs) in TIM
This article presents the hierarchical structure of the mind’s executive function according to the Integrated Theory of Mind (TIM). The model defines three Operating Systems (OS) as the “system software” that translates the predictions of the Prognostica Mens (PM) into concrete actions. The foundation is the Interweave (Im/Ip), the continuous link between motor command $(I_m)$ and sensory feedback $(I_p)$. The hierarchy consists of three levels with specific cortical areas and Morphogenesis principles:Level 1 (OS1): Control of the Whole (Soma), ensuring Holistic Dynamic Equilibrium (Motor/Somatosensory Cortex – MO).Level 2 (OSC): Management of Communication and symbolism (Premotor/Associative Cortex – MO).Level 3 (OSA): Execution of Metric Action (Premotor/Parietal/Associative Cortex – MQ), requiring the recognition of the interaction entity and managing interaction through metric sequences of gestures or perceptions.The parallel analysis with modern robotics demonstrates that the greatest engineering challenge lies in Level 1, whose stability is the fundamental precondition for the operability of the higher levels.
