Introduction: Mapping the Mind’s Cockpit
Our life is a continuous and seemingly effortless flow of actions, perceptions, and communications. While we walk (maintaining balance), we are speaking (communicating a symbol) and simultaneously grasping an object (measuring space). Hidden behind this fluidity is an incredibly complex, hierarchical control system.
The Integrated Theory of Mind (TIM) defines this system as a hierarchy of Operating Systems (OS). These OS are the “system software” that translates our intentions and predictions (the strategic work of the Prognostica Mens (PM), our predictive consciousness) into concrete actions.
The heart of every OS is the Interweave between what the mind intends to do, called Motor Information (Im – Output), and what the body feels in real-time, called Perceptive Information (Ip – Input).
| Variable | Type of Information | Origin | Function |
| Im | Motor (Output) | Center (PM Intention) | Sends the action plan to the muscles. |
| Ip | Perceptive (Input) | Periphery (Sensory Receptors) | Provides real-time feedback to the Responsiva Mens ($R_M$). |
Understanding this Whole/Part hierarchy and the Center (Im)/Periphery (Ip) polarity is crucial for mapping the incredible executive architecture that allows us to act, speak, and interact in the world.
I. Level 1: The Primary Executive System (OS1)
The Holistic Foundation: The Im1/Ip1 Interweave
The First-Level Operating System (OS1) is the executive foundation of the body (Soma). It acts as an unconscious “autopilot” and ensures fundamental stability and strength.
- Operational Formula: Im1/Ip1 (the somatic micro-cycle).
- Dominant Morphogenesis: Holistic Morphogenesis (MO).
- Involved Cortical Areas: The Interweave is physical and primary, directly involving the Primary Motor Cortex (M1) for Output and the Primary Somatosensory Cortex (S1) for real-time Input.
Function: Dynamic Equilibrium
Level 1 deals with the Whole (the body in its entirety). Its function is not the absence of movement (Static Relation), but the maintenance of Dynamic Equilibrium: an active and continuous balancing of multiple internal Dynamic Relations.
Explanatory Example (Ataraxia): Maintaining an upright posture (Somatic Ataraxia). The body is always in slight disequilibrium; the Im1/Ip1 Interweave (M1/S1) performs a continuous trial-and-error-correction adjustment every millisecond. This is the micro-cycle of the Responsiva Mens (RM) acting at the intrinsic, somatic level. MO ensures that all muscles cooperate to maintain the body as a single, stable Interwoven Form.
Additional Example (Strength): When lifting a crate, Level 1 unconsciously stabilizes the spine and legs. This stabilization of the Whole via Dynamic Equilibrium is the necessary condition for Level 3 to then use the hand (a Part) to grasp with precision.
The Analogy with Robotics: The Maximum Difficulty (HS)
The OS1 represents the most demanding engineering challenge. The first successes in robotics were not bipedal humanoids capable of walking, but anchored systems. This demonstrated that Level 1, requiring the stability of the Holistic Self (HS), is the most complex executive precondition.
II. Level 2: Communication Operating Systems (OSC)
The Holistic Domain: The Im2/Ip2 Interweave and Symbolism
The OSC manages interaction with the symbolic and relational world, involving the Ego Cogitans (EC) (symbolic thought) and the Ego Socialis (ES) (social interaction).
- Operational Formula: Im2/Ip2 (Plurality of interwoven districts).
- Dominant Morphogenesis: Holistic Morphogenesis (MO).
- Involved Cortical Areas: Premotor Cortex (PMC) for planning and Associative Cortex (access to memory, language, and symbols).
Function: Symbolic Unity
MO is dominant because communication requires the production of unitary, not metrically segmented forms (symbols, words, emotions).
Explanatory Example (Language): In producing a word, the action of all phonoarticulatory organs (lips, tongue, diaphragm) must be unified by MO (Im2) so that the result is perceived as a unitary form (the symbol) rather than a series of discrete muscle movements.
Additional Example (Mimicry): When we nod, the head tilt, eye contact, and facial muscles work simultaneously to create the holistic form of consent. The Associative Cortex provides the symbolic context that allows those movements to be perceived as a unified message.
III. Level 3: Action Operating System (OSA)
Metric Precision: The Im3/Ip3 Interweave and Quantum Morphogenesis (MQ)
The OSA is the architecture dedicated to the Ego Agens (EA) and the metric measurement and segmentation of physical space.
- Operational Formula: Im3/Ip3 (Pair Relationship).
- Dominant Morphogenesis: Quantum Morphogenesis (MQ).
- Involved Cortical Areas:
- Posterior Parietal Cortex (LPP): Essential for metric and spatial localization (the “where” pathway).
- Premotor Cortex (PMC): Planning and sequencing.
- Associative Cortex (Inferior Temporal Lobe – ITL): Crucial for the recognition of the interaction entity (the “what” pathway).
Function: Interaction and Metric Segmentation
MQ segments the world into Non-Interwoven Figures (discrete objects) to calculate precise Interaction. The action is a Pair Relationship between the manipulation organ (somatic Part) and the external object (relational Entity).
Necessity of Recognition (The “What” Pathway): The OSA cannot act solely with measure (MQ); it must know the nature of the object. The interaction entity must be recognized.
Example 1 (Gesture Action): Interaction can concern two gestures: Gesture A (spreading the brush in the foam) is District 1. Gesture B (spreading the brush with the foam on the face) is District 2. The OSA calculates the precise metric transition (MQ) between the two states as a sequence of pair Interactions.
Example 2 (Perceptual Sequence): Interaction can concern two perceptions: Perception A (looking at “c”) is District 1. Perception B (looking at “i”) is District 2. In this circumstance, a single bodily district (the eyes) is used for a sequence of metric actions (saccades). The Im3/Ip3 Interweave (of the eyes) is guided by the MQ of the Parietal Cortex to transition exactly from focal point A to focal point B.
Example 3 (External Object): Grasping a hot coffee cup. The Parietal Cortex (MQ) calculates the metric trajectory (Static Relation of space), while the Associative Cortex (the “what” pathway) activates the memory that informs the EA that the cup is fragile and hot, influencing the force and angle of Interaction.
The Analogy with Robotics: Recognition and the Database Function
Precision robotic arms are pure OSA systems. By anchoring the system, engineers could focus solely on the precision of the QS (measure) and the programming of the “what” pathway (identification).
Explicit Database Function (The Analog of Associative Memory):
For the action to be effective, spatial measurement (the where) must be informed by recognition (the what).
- The robot compares the segmented image and form of the object (e.g., a coffee cup) with an internal Database (Associative Memory).
- This database contains the categorical properties of the object: “Coffee Cup” (category), “Fragility” (low permissible force threshold), “Hot Content” (grip area to avoid).
- Result: If the database did not provide this information (the “what” pathway), the robot might perfectly calculate the metric trajectory (the where), but grasp the object with excessive force or in the wrong spot. The failure is due to a lack of categorical knowledge (MO) that should inform the metric action (MQ).
Level 3 (OSA) is the most directly replicable function, but only insofar as it is subordinate to both underlying stability (Level 1) and categorical knowledge (The “what” pathway).
IV. The Prognostica Mens (PM): The Headquarters
The three Levels of Operating Systems (OS) are all subordinate to and synchronized by the Prognostica Mens (PM).
- Synchrony: The PM decides the Intention (the goal) and selects the appropriate OS.
- Predictive and Responsive: It uses the Predictiva Mens (PM) to make predictions (working on Static Relations and MO templates) and the Responsiva Mens (RM) to adjust the action in real-time based on the feedback (Ip) received from all levels.
This hierarchy defines the complex, yet coherent, architecture through which the mind manifests itself in action and interaction in the world.
