Methodological and Epistemological Premise
As outlined in the General Manifesto of the Integrated Theory of Mind, the Prognostica Mens is articulated through Three EGOs (the pilots of action and experience) supported and nourished by the Six Structural Nodes.
To guarantee extreme clarity and avoid conceptual overload for the non-expert reader, we will maintain the same methodological framework as the Nodes: we will separate the mathematical logic of identity (Cognitive Domain) from the anatomical infrastructure that realizes it (Biophysical Domain).
Intellectual honesty requires us to clarify that the biological “building blocks” described in this essay are not speculative inventions of TIM: Sensory Attenuation (Wolpert), Empathy networks (Singer), the visuo-tactile expansion of space (Iriki, Fadiga), introspective thought networks (Raichle), and extracorporeal calculation (Blanke) are solid evidence provided by contemporary neuroscience. However, these discoveries often lie isolated in their respective fields of research. The revolutionary contribution of TIM consists in uniting these tiles into a single mosaic. TIM demonstrates how using a hammer, feeling pain for a friend, and solving a mathematical equation with closed eyes are the three faces of a single, majestic topological equation of the Self.
PART I: THE COGNITIVE-INFORMATIONAL DOMAIN (The Logic of Identity)
In this first domain, we will investigate the rules, calculations, and phenomenology of Identity, setting aside neural networks for a moment to focus on the “Software” of our existence.
1. The Illusion of Static Identity
To decode the dynamics of human identity, we must first question the most intimate and apparently obvious perception we possess: the sense of our own bodily boundaries. The individual takes for granted that their “I”, their sentient essence, ends exactly and rigidly where their epidermis ends. It is commonly thought that we are “inside” the body and that the world is objectively “outside”.
A careful observation of our daily life resoundingly refutes this certainty. Consider driving a car to park it in a very tight space. While reversing, we are not coldly calculating the geometric distance between our eyes and the wall: we physically feel the dimensions of the car; we sense the rear bumper as if it were our own skin. If the bumper scrapes against the wall, our body internally jolts, experiencing a retraction reflex as if we had been hit ourselves. In that moment, the car is not an external object, but has become a temporary extension of our identity. Yet, as soon as we turn off the engine and step out of the cabin, our “I” deflates, instantly retreating inside our clothes.
Human identity, therefore, is not an iron armor in which we are trapped. It is a fluid boundary, an extremely elastic topological interface that the mind dilates to engulf the world and swiftly contracts to protect the physical body.
2. The Topological Foundation: The Axiom of the Scene (Gravity)
Before understanding how the mind extends into the world, we must establish the single, inexorable limit of this fluidity. The logical Self can choose not to use a tool or not to speak to anyone, but there is one thing from which the Self can never detach itself: planet Earth.
TIM defines this limit as The Axiom of the Scene. The earth, the “down”, is the stage upon which predictive consciousness constantly rests. This inevitability is guaranteed by the vector of Earth’s gravity (1g). Whether the individual is lying in bed, standing, or suspended for a fraction of a second during a jump, the gravity signal keeps them ruthlessly anchored. This anchoring is the “Absolute Epigenetic Prior”: a perpetually active background calculation that establishes the baseline of the “I”. Without the continuous resolution of this gravitational equilibrium, predictive consciousness loses its coordinates and disintegrates into vertigo and panic.
An objection to this Axiom might come from astronauts: how does identity survive in empty space? The answer confirms the rule. When the 1g signal is lost in orbit, the mind undergoes a catastrophic collapse known as Space Adaptation Syndrome (total loss of the boundaries of the “I”). To survive microgravity, the Prognostica Mens is forced to perform a desperate algorithmic calculation: a Sensory Recalibration. It delegates the sense of balance to sight, artificially anchoring the sense of “down” to what the eyes see as the floor of the spacecraft. The mind tolerates weightlessness, but it can never tolerate the absence of a Scene.
3. The Dynamics of Extension: Attenuation vs. Hybridization
With the anchoring to the Scene secured, how does the brain calculate where the “Me” ends and the “World” begins? TIM demonstrates that our psychological boundary is the result of a perpetual clash between two opposing vectorial forces:
- Sensory Attenuation (The Closed Self): It seems a paradox, but to feel that it “owns” a body, the mind must first learn to ignore it. Why can’t we tickle ourselves? Because when we voluntarily decide to move a hand to touch ourselves, the predictive brain orders the senses to silence themselves and dampen the incoming sensation (exploiting the Efference Copy). The brain cancels the tickle to tell itself: “I predicted this touch, therefore it belongs to me.” This Sensory Attenuation is the pole of isolation. It ensures ownership of the body, protecting us from confusing our own movement with a predator’s attack.
- Hybridization (The Extended Self): This is the explosive contrary force. It is the formidable ability of the mind to temporarily loosen the shield of Attenuation and project its predictions beyond the limits of the skin, fusing its expectations with inert matter or the environment.
4. The Birth of the Three EGOs and the Helm of Attention
Depending on which “target” the mind decides to engulf during Hybridization, three distinct phenomenological manifestations are generated: the Three EGOs.
- Ego Agens (Material Extension): The target of hybridization is the discrete inorganic environment, namely the tool. The mind expands the boundaries of the body to calculate and use an object (a hammer or a car) as if it were part of its own flesh.
- Ego Socialis (Intersubjective Extension): The target is a biology similar to ours: another human being. The mind projects its predictions onto the intentions and emotions of others, generating Empathy.
- Ego Cogitans (Recursive Extension): The target is the mind itself. Hybridization “bounces” inward, isolating itself from the physical world. The mind stops perceiving the outside and simulates possible worlds within itself, generating abstract thought, mathematics, and memory.
If human identity possesses these three impressive modalities, who decides moment by moment which form our “I” should assume? It is Attentional Focus. Attention operates like the Helm of the ship. If attention fixes on a screw to be tightened, the mind crystallizes into the Ego Agens. If it is captured by a child’s cry, the helm turns sharply: the system abandons the tool and configures itself as Ego Socialis. If we close our eyes in silence, the focus collapses upon itself and triggers the abstract simulation of the Ego Cogitans.
PART II: THE BIOPHYSICAL DOMAIN (The Hardware of Extension and Synthesis)
Having defined the logic and phenomenology of Identity, we must now descend into neurobiology. What are the exact neural networks (the Hardware) that allow the brain to extend its boundaries and not go mad in the process?
5. The Hardware of Ego Agens: Peripersonal Space (PPS)
When we grasp a hammer or drive a car, we do not merely use logic. Modern neuroscience has mapped an extraordinary anatomical infrastructure called Peripersonal Space (PPS). Our brain possesses special “bimodal” neurons (which combine sight and touch data) located in the parietal and premotor areas. Their function is to map an invisible “bubble”, a spatial shield a few centimeters around our skin.
What happens anatomically when we use the hammer? In a few seconds of use, these neurons dynamically reprogram themselves: the bubble of Peripersonal Space physically dilates to engulf the length of the tool (Iriki; Fadiga). The neural network begins to treat the iron tip of the hammer exactly as if it were the tip of our index finger. Our biological Markov Blanket has expanded. As soon as we drop the hammer, the neurons reset and the Peripersonal Space deflates, retreating safely to the skin.
6. The Hardware of Ego Socialis: The Insula and Visceral Empathy
When we comfort a crying friend, our connection is not just a psychological construct. For years, “mirror neurons” were discussed to explain how we imitate the movements of others. But true, deep human Empathy requires visceral hardware.
Fundamental neuroimaging studies (Singer, 2004) have demonstrated that when we see a loved one experience pain or anguish, our brain activates a deep region called the Anterior Insula. The Insula is the organ responsible for making us feel physical pain, disgust, and the palpitations of our own body. Seeing our friend suffer lights up our Insula exactly as if the wound were on our own skin. We intimately understand the other’s pain because we have extended our neurophysiology to process the receptors of their body. The Ego Socialis is an anatomical hybridization.
7. The Hardware of Ego Cogitans: The Default Mode Network (DMN)
How does brain matter generate abstract thought, disconnecting from the world to travel through time? For a long time, science did not know how to physiologically explain abstraction, until the most mysterious and energy-consuming neural network of the brain was discovered: the Default Mode Network (DMN) (Raichle, 2001). The DMN is the hardware of the Ego Cogitans. It is a vast network (including the medial prefrontal cortex and the posterior cingulate) that turns off when we perform manual work toward the outside, but ignites explosively as soon as we close our eyes in a quiet room. The brain never rests: when it stops calculating external reality, it turns on the DMN to daydream, remember the past, and plan the future.
8. Motor Inhibition: The Lifesaver of the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN)
The existence of the Ego Cogitans brings with it a lethal mechanical danger. To imagine running in a meadow, the cerebral cortex must simulate the movement in detail. But it must rigorously prevent the actual muscles from contracting; otherwise, the body would perpetually act out its abstract hallucinations.
Here enters the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN), the powerful “emergency handbrake” of the Basal Ganglia (explored in Node 6). When the DMN turns on to think, the STN reacts by paralyzing the outgoing impulse to the spinal cord. It is this extremely clear physical isolation, this paralysis imposed by the STN, that grants the mind the “safe room” to abstract itself and travel through time without taking a single step. Human abstract thought is literally born on the shoulders of inhibited musculature.
9. The Compass of Reality: The Temporoparietal Junction (TPJ)
There is one final, very grave danger. If Identity extends by engulfing cars, feeling the pain of friends, and wandering in the past with the DMN, how do we not lose our sense of reality? How do we know that we have not turned into a metal machine, or that the pain we feel is not breaking our own real arm? The supreme synthesis, the “compass” that keeps Identity anchored, is managed by a specific cortical area: the Temporoparietal Junction (TPJ).
The TPJ is the biological calculator of causal boundaries. It incessantly separates “Me” from “Not-Me”. While we use the car or feel strong empathy, it is the TPJ that whispers the truth that saves us from psychosis: “You feel the bumper as if it were yours, but you are not the car”; “You understand the friend’s pain, but your physical body is intact”. The definitive proof comes from clinical neurology: if the TPJ suffers a lesion or is artificially stimulated (Blanke, 2002), the patient experiences the famous Out-of-Body Experiences (feeling themselves floating outside their own body) or psychotic symptoms. The “I” has expanded, but the topological calculator has broken and can no longer retract the boundary, disintegrating the certainty of existing.
Conclusion
This final monograph revolutionizes the concept of human Identity. The human being is not a ghost imprisoned in the bone cage of the skull, but an extraordinarily expansive Prognostica Mens, designed to colonize the surrounding reality in obedience to the inexorable law of Earth’s Gravity.
Guided by the logical helm of Attention, protected by the neuromotor brake of the Subthalamic Nucleus, and anchored to reality by the spatial synthesis of the TPJ, our Self breathes continuously. It retreats into the solipsistic silence of Sensory Attenuation to guarantee the integrity of the body, and explosively extends into inorganic matter (Peripersonal Space), into the visceral empathy of our peers (Insula), and into the abstract symbols of thought (DMN). Understanding the mechanics of the Three EGOs means unveiling the final equation of the Integrated Theory of Mind, making the human mind the only biological entity capable of engulfing, simulating, and therefore understanding the entire Universe.
