The Primary Executive System (SO-1): The Unconscious Motor-Perceptual Interweave (Im/Ip)

Introduction: The Necessity of a Somatic Autopilot

When we walk or stand, we are not actively thinking about every muscle that needs to contract to prevent a fall. Most of the debate in cognitive science focuses on conscious thought processes, often neglecting this basic mechanism that guarantees our very physical existence.

The Integrated Theory of Mind (TIM) addresses this gap by postulating a hierarchy of Operating Systems (SO). At the most fundamental level lies the First Level Operating System (SO1). Our body is not guided by a remote control; it is a highly sophisticated internal feedback system, intrinsic to the Soma. The goal of this article is to describe the essential element of the SO1: the Motor-Perceptual Interweave (Im-Ip), and to demonstrate why its stability is the absolute precondition for any conscious action.


1. The Complementary Nature of the Im-Ip Interweave

The SO1 operates at an automatic and unconscious level, without requiring the direct intervention of the Prognostica Mens (PM). It is defined by the Im-Ip Interweave, an inseparable bond between the movement command and the sensation of the movement itself.

A. The Cortical Areas and the Im-Ip Formula

The Interweave is the continuous fusion of two types of information managed by the brain’s primary areas:

  • Im (Motor Information): This is the Output command sent by the Primary Motor Cortex (M1). It represents the unconscious intention to move a muscle or muscle group.
  • Ip (Intrinsic Perceptual Information): This is the real-time sensory Input, provided by the Primary Somatosensory Cortex (S1). This information comes from the body’s internal receptors (in muscles and joints) and communicates precise data on tension, angle, and velocity in action.

B. The Principle of Biunivocity and Complementarity

The Im-Ip Interweave is not a simple reaction but a fundamental interdependence: the execution of a command (Im) is only possible by virtue of the immediate and continuous reception of sensory feedback (Ip).

Example: Consider the act of pouring water from a pitcher. The motor command (Im) for tilting must be constantly calibrated by the feedback (Ip) regarding the muscle tension in the arm and the angle of tilt. Without the Ip, the Im would be “blind”: the tilt would continue past the necessary point, leading to the failure of the action.


2. The Critical Role of Holistic Morphogenesis (MO) and Gait

The SO1 does not manage single signals, but operates with Interwoven Forms, encoding the entire tension-position-velocity pattern as a single functional unit. This process, which manages the entire body, is governed by the principle of Holistic Morphogenesis (MO).

A. Equilibrium and Gait

The maintenance of Dynamic Equilibrium during movement is the most continuous manifestation of MO’s action and the Im-Ip Interweave.

  • Constant Disequilibrium: The human body, especially when standing or walking, is intrinsically unstable, existing in a state of slight, continuous disequilibrium.
  • Unconscious Correction: The Im-Ip Interweave (MO) ensures that, every millisecond, the Im command is adjusted instantly based on the Ip received. This maintains Somatic Ataraxia, which is the absence of a physical disturbance that would require conscious attention.
  • Gait: Walking is a controlled sequence of falling and recovery. Every step is a small disequilibrium corrected by the SO1. If the Ip were to fail (for example, if the foot slipped on an ice patch), the Im-Ip mechanism gives way, triggering a motor reflex before the higher systems (PM) are consciously aware of the fall.

B. Force Calibration and the Responsiva Mens (RM)

The Im-Ip Interweave is the physical basis for unconscious force calibration (MO). This mechanism is a micro-cycle of trial-error-correction that occurs at the somatic level and represents the Responsiva Mens (RM) in action at the intrinsic level.

Example: If we try to lift a plastic pitcher that we believe is full, but it’s actually empty. The initial Im is too strong. The Ip (from the muscle sensors) immediately signals a Massive Discrepancy (excessive muscle tension for the weight). The Im-Ip Interweave instantly reduces the Im to balance the tension, preventing the pitcher from flying out of our hand.


3. From Level 1 to Higher Levels: The Anchor of Stability

The SO1 is a necessary precondition for the functioning of the Level 2 (SOC) and Level 3 (SOA) Operating Systems. Its function is not the goal (which is provided by the PM), but the means for execution.

A. The Execution Engine

The Im-Ip is the “engine” of execution that the higher levels borrow for their purposes.

When the SOA (Level 3) decides to grasp a glass (a metric action guided by Quantum Morphogenesis, MQ), it does not concern itself with how to contract the individual muscles of the palm. Its role is to guide the (metric) action toward the spatial target. The Im-Ip Interweave (Level 1) simply provides the basic force and the correct tension required for the act of grasping.

B. The Analogy with Robotics: The Unavoidable Foundation

The evolution of robotics clearly demonstrates the importance of the SO1:

  • Reverse Engineering: For years, robotic engineers have had to bypass the complexity of Level 1 (the Dynamic Equilibrium of the entire body) by securing the executive systems (robotic arms) to an anchored and immobile base.
  • The Proof: This artificial solution highlights that, in biological reality, the resolution of Dynamic Equilibrium (the stability of the Im-Ip Interweave) is the most difficult function. Without a guaranteed stable foundation (be it biological or mechanical), any sophisticated Level 3 calculation fails.

The SO1 is therefore the holistic foundation (MO) upon which all actions and communications of the integrated mind rest.
