The Predicting Mind: How the Prognostica Mens and Attention Organize Our Self

Introduction: The Self as the Orchestra Conductor

Let us imagine our mind as a complex orchestra, where thousands of instruments (cognitive processes) must play in unison. The Self is the conductor.

The scientific debate has long sought to understand whether Experiential Consciousness (EC) arises from a single part of the brain or is the result of selection mechanisms, such as attention. The Integrated Theory of Mind (TIM) proposes a solution: the Prognostica Mens (PM) is the functional structure that fulfills this role, operating by constantly predicting what will happen and verifying if the prediction comes true.

The PM is based on two fundamental principles: the Holistic Self (HS), which looks at the big picture (the “form” of things), and the Quantum Self (QS), which analyzes individual details (the “quanta”).

This article defines the architecture of the PM across its two operational modes and clarifies the role of attention, distinguishing it from the generative mechanism of awareness (Lezak, 1982; Plutchik, 1980).


Section A: The Genesis of Information and the Center/Periphery Dichotomy

For the PM to operate, it must receive discrete and conscious information. This occurs through the interaction between the periphery and the cognitive center.

A.1. Cognitive Periphery: From Wave Function to Information

The Cognitive Periphery is the set of receptors and effectors of the body; it serves as the interface between the physical world and the nervous system. Knowledge for the system emerges at this functional boundary:

  • Wave Function: This is the raw physical or energetic signal (e.g., light, sound, pressure), which lacks intrinsic knowledge for the nervous system.
  • Information: This is the discrete entity, the “quantum of knowledge,” that emerges through Transduction, the process by which a Wave Function is converted into a conscious Cognitive Input.

Illustrative Example (Transduction): Sound (Wave Function) is captured by the hair cells in the ear (Cognitive Periphery), which convert it into a discrete nerve impulse (Auditory Information). Only at this point can the information travel to the higher centers and become functionally relevant.

A.2. Cognitive Center: The Seat of Processing and Prediction

The Cognitive Center (the prefrontal cortex) is the seat of processing, integration, and prediction. It receives conscious Cognitive Input from the periphery and compares it with past predictions and future intentions.

  • Bidirectional Interaction: The Center (PM) generates a predictive command (output) and continuously compares it with the returning sensory feedback (input) from the Cognitive Periphery. Awareness resides in this higher level of continuous comparison.

Illustrative Example (Center/Periphery Interaction): If we reach out a hand to grab a cup, the Cognitive Center sends a predictive command about the expected trajectory. Muscle receptors (Periphery) send continuous feedback on the state of the muscle. If the cup is heavier than expected, the discrepancy between the predicted command and the actual feedback activates the PM to immediately correct the movement.


1. The Prognostica Mens: The Mind’s Two Modes

The Prognostica Mens (PM) is divided into two complementary functions that work together to manage our experience.

A. Predictiva Mens (PdM): The Holistic Autopilot and Center Synchronization

The Predictiva Mens (PdM) is the mode that builds our baseline reality, the one we use when we are on “autopilot” or performing routine tasks.

  • Holistic and Synchronized Activation (HS): The Unity of Consciousness. The PdM is a dynamic associative network of specialized cognitive centers that activate simultaneously and in a synchronized manner to generate the basic fabric of perceived reality. The Holistic Self (HS) coordinates this work, ensuring that experience is not a collection of fragments but a single, stable, holistic construct. The unity of consciousness stems from the temporal and spatial coincidence of the parallel synchronization of these macro-centers.

Illustrative Example (PdM): When an individual is driving a car on a habitual route. The PdM is active and synchronizes macro-centers such as: 1) the center for steering movements based on visual guidance (automatic motor control), 2) the center for auditory perception (listening to the radio/music), and 3) the center for routine spatial analysis. There is no focused attention on every single stimulus, because the prediction is correct.

B. Responsiva Mens (RM): The Executive Intervention Agent

The Responsiva Mens (RM) is the executive mode of the PM that actively intervenes for selection, verification, or adjustment when the prediction fails or there is an unexpected novelty. It is our agent of change and corrective action.

  • Executive Orchestration: PM Activation During the Unexpected. The PM (in RM mode) activates as an agent of executive reorganization. The RM allows the PM to actively shift from routine mode (PdM) to a specific cognitive center to intervene (e.g., the center for cognitive flexibility and inhibition). This shift and subsequent action represent the act of Executive Orchestration. The RM does not just “see” the problem, but immediately generates new corrective motor outputs that restore equilibrium (Miyake et al., 2000).

Illustrative Example (RM): Revisiting the driving example. If, suddenly, a pedestrian unexpectedly crosses the road, the Responsiva Mens intervenes:

  • Shift (Focus): The RM interrupts the PdM synchronization and shifts activity from the automatic driving macro-center to the specific micro-center of control and execution related to the motor district for braking.
  • Orchestration (Action): The RM orchestrates the action by generating the new corrective motor output (pressing the brake) and, at the same time, activates attention (the “spotlight”) on the pedestrian as a mechanism to enrich the critical information and evaluate the margins for maneuver.

2. Attention: Not the Light, but the Spotlight

Within the PM framework, attention is not the cause, but a fundamental instrumental process for predictive verification and adjustment, entirely carried out by the RM (Posner & DiGirolamo, 1998).

A. Attentional Focusing (Zoom In/Out)

The Responsiva Mens (RM) performs the act of attentional focusing, using it as an adjustable spotlight (a mechanism of selection and enrichment).

  • Instrumental Function: Directing Awareness. Attention does not create awareness, but directs it at the service of the PM, allowing for modulation of the resolution of perception and analysis:
    • “Zoom In”: Allows for the discrimination of crucial details (activates the Quantum Self).
    • “Zoom Out”: Restores the holistic context (re-activates the Holistic Self).
  • Serving Prediction: Attention is activated whenever the continuous comparison between the predictive intention (of the PM) and the returning feedback detects a discrepancy, enabling the RM to gather the necessary data for reorganization.

Illustrative Example (Zoom In/Out): You are reading a complex text (PdM activates the reading routine). Suddenly, you notice a misspelled word or a logical error.

  • Zoom In (Critical Detail): The RM activates the attentional “zoom in”: all mental activity focuses on that specific word to decipher or correct it, interrupting the fluidity of holistic reading.
  • Zoom Out (Context Restoration): After correcting the word, the RM deactivates the focus and performs a “zoom out” to restore the holistic context, returning to the parallel synchronization of the PdM for fluid comprehension of the entire paragraph.

3. Morphogenesis and Articulatory Orchestration: The Structural and Articulatory Evolution of the Self

The PM changes with experience through distinct processes: Morphogenesis (input/structure processing) and the acquisition of Output Experience (motor refinement).

A. Holistic and Quantum Morphogenesis (Structural Bottom-Up Processing)

Morphogenesis is the process of bottom-up input processing that alters and increases the internal structure of the PM (Dynamic Knowledge), leading to Cognitive Morphogenesis:

  • Holistic Morphogenesis: Refines the capacity of the HS to synthesize and understand the “form” of things.
  • Quantum Morphogenesis: Improves the capacity of the QS to analyze specific details, the individual quanta of information.

The interaction between the two pathways leads to structural increase: experience increases the number of Cognitive Centers and their organization into complex subsets.

B. Output Experience and Articulatory Orchestration (Motor-Relational Execution)

Output Experience concerns the acquisition of new and improved motor skills, refined by the Responsiva Mens (RM) through Articulatory Orchestration.

  • Articulatory Orchestration: This is the process by which the RM makes action more sophisticated, generating more efficient corrective motor outputs. It translates the structural transformation of the PM (Morphogenesis) into execution ability, depending on our evolutionary stage:
    • Ego Agens (EA): Primary Executive Articulation (e.g., withdrawing the hand from a hot object – Quantum Interaction).
    • Ego Socialis (ES) & Ego Cogitans (EC): Complex Executive Orchestration (concerns Holistic Intertwined Forms, such as facial expression or sophisticated language).

Illustrative Example (Morphogenesis vs. Output): An adult stumbles. Their PM is highly morphogenetic (complex internal structure). Their RM is structurally capable of drawing upon motor subsets that allow for fast and efficient motor reorganization (for example, balancing the body without falling). This capacity is the result of structural transformation (Cognitive Morphogenesis) which manifests in the ability to execute (Articulatory Orchestration).


Conclusions

The Prognostica Mens (PM) emerges as the structure that unifies consciousness and allows the Self to evolve. The RM’s capacity to orchestrate attention and action (Articulatory Orchestration) is key to our adaptability, while Morphogenesis (Holistic and Quantum) is the engine of our internal structural growth. TIM thus offers an integrated framework for understanding the dynamic architecture and functional evolution of the mind, which begins with signal Transduction at the Periphery and is perfected in the Cognitive Center.
