Towards an Integrated Theory of Mind (TIM)

1. Introduction: The Mind as an Active Architect and Seeker of Equilibrium

The complexity of the human mind has always captivated research. Traditionally, studies have often focused on separate functional spheres. However, our view suggests that these do not operate in isolation but are expressions of a dynamic, integrated system (Damasio, 1994; Pessoa, 2013). Although modern neuroscience offers rich details on neural mechanisms, its approach can make it difficult to describe complex mental functions in purely mechanistic terms.

To overcome these difficulties, we propose a novel theory of mind centered on the acting/perceiving subject. The theory is structured around the Prognostica Mens (PM), the central mental organ that orchestrates the mind’s entire dynamic through a universal operating mode: anticipation and verification. In simple terms, the mind continuously predicts what will happen and verifies whether the actual world matches that prediction.

The PM is articulated in the functional manifestations of the Ego Agens, Ego Socialis, and Ego Cogitans. Underlying everything are the two Meta-Functional Cardinal Principles: the Holistic Self (HS) and the Quantum Self (QS), which define the two fundamental ways of processing reality.

2. The Prognostica Mens (PM): The Superior Cognitive Center

The Prognostica Mens (PM) stands as the unifying, central mental organ that orchestrates the mind’s entire dynamic. The PM, which is superordinate to the executive circuits (Operating Systems), constitutes the Superior Cognitive Center (corresponding to the Prefrontal Cortex), the locus of Dynamic Relational Knowledge—active and contextual knowledge—and Prediction. From the subject’s perspective, the PM is the fundamental operating mode of “knowing how”: generating predictions (anticipations) and verifying them against incoming sensory input.

The PM operates with the intrinsic goal of achieving and maintaining constant equilibrium. This ceaseless cycle of anticipation/verification guides action and perception at all levels.

The Duality of the PM: Predictiva and Responsiva

The PM manifests in two complementary operational modes, activated based on context: the Predictiva Mens (PdM) and the Responsiva Mens (RM). Prediction error acts as the transition signal.

The transition between PdM and RM is automatic: when sensory input does not match the prediction, the prediction error fires, immediately activating the RM for more intense analysis and adjustment.

The Center-Periphery Cycle

The PM’s functioning is intrinsically linked to the Cognitive Periphery.

  • The Cognitive Periphery: Interface and Transduction: Not an anatomical area, but the set of all receptors (visual, tactile, etc.). Its role is Transduction: converting the Wave Function (the raw physical signal, e.g., light) into information (a relevant “quantum of knowledge”).
  • The Center (PM): Generates predictions (output) and continuously compares them with information from the periphery. Awareness emerges in this continuous comparison between what the mind expects and what it actually receives.

3. The Cardinal Principles: Holistic Self (HS) and Quantum Self (QS)

HS and QS are the Meta-Functional Cardinal Principles that define the two fundamental ways the PM perceives and structures reality.

A. Holistic Self (HS): The Holistic Principle (Unity)

  • Meta-Functional Role: It is the principle of Unity and Inseparable Fusion (Koffka, 1935). It allows the mind to perceive the world in terms of Gestalt and Symbolic Meaning.
  • Executive Function: Guides Holistic (fusional) processes. Its executive manifestation is expressed by the Communication Operating Systems (SOC), and it is the guiding principle for First-Level Movement (Primary Motor Cortex/Associative Cortex).
  • Example: The articulation of a syllable (e.g., BA) or the expression of an emotion through the face (e.g., a smile) are motor acts that the HS executes as single, fusional units, manifesting an indivisible meaning.

B. Quantum Self (QS): The Quantum Principle (Discretion)

  • Meta-Functional Role: It is the principle of Discretion and Separable Identity. It allows the mind to analyze reality in terms of distinct elements, ordered sequences, and Metric Position (Hic) in space-time.
  • Executive Function: Guides Quantum (segmented/parallel) processes. Its executive manifestation is expressed by the Action Operating System (SOA), which manages interaction with separable entities (e.g., me and the apple).
  • Example: When one needs to measure a distance or count steps, it is the QS that analyzes space-time into discrete, sequential elements.

4. Cognitive Morphogenesis: Construction of Knowledge (Input)

Cognitive Morphogenesis is the process by which the Cognitive Center (the PM) synthesizes information from the Periphery, structuring Dynamic Knowledge. It is an input process.

This process is the integration of two fundamental pathways, which correspond to the QS and HS principles:

The Operating Systems (OSs) are the circuits of Functional Circuit Logic (Level 2 planning) that the PM, via the Responsiva Mens (RM), selects to translate the prediction into action.

A. Action Operating System (SOA)

  • Manifestation of: Quantum Self (QS). The SOA manages physical and metric interaction (Ego Agens) and operates in a Quantum, Segmented, and Parallel manner.
  • Detailed Example (Grasping an Apple): When grasping an apple, the SOA does not see a single act but two distinct functions operating in parallel (segmentation):
    • Reaching: Controls position in space (the “Where”).
    • Grip: Controls the hand shape to adapt to the apple’s size and consistency (the “What”).

The segmented control of the SOA is not about individual muscles but the high-level predictive planning and verification of the functional entities (hand/space and hand/apple).

B. Communication Operating Systems (SOC)

  • Manifestation of: Holistic Self (HS). The SOC manages social and cognitive functions (Ego Socialis/Ego Cogitans) and operates in a Holistic, Fusional, and Co-articulated manner.
  • Detailed Example (The Syllable): The syllable (e.g., BA) is not perceived or produced as the sequence phoneme B + phoneme A, but as a single “Entangled Forme.” The sounds fuse into an unframed motor block. This fusion (a property of the HS) is essential for Symbolic Meaning (Deacon, 1998).

6. Functional Realizations: The Three “Egos”

The Ego is not an organ but the evolutionary functional manifestation of the PM in different domains of experience. The distinction between the three Egos is based on evolutionary levels of the nervous system’s structural architecture.

7. Neurophysiological Anchoring: Alpha and Gamma

The abstract concepts of the TIM find a biological basis in motoneurons, the crucial efferents connecting the Center to the periphery (Leonardi, 2025).

  • Alpha Motoneurons ($\alpha$MNs): Innervate the extrafusal muscle fibers. They are the primary executive instrument of the Predictiva Mens (PdM) for executing efficient actions.
  • Gamma Motoneurons ($\gamma$MNs): Innervate the intrafusal muscle fibers. They are the mediators of the Responsiva Mens (RM), modulating spindle sensitivity to receive detailed sensory feedback in uncertain contexts.

Alpha-gamma coactivation is the core of the anticipation/verification cycle. The RM relies on the selective modulation of $\gamma$MNs to support the SOA’s segmented control (e.g., separately monitoring position and shape signals) and the SOC’s fusional control.

8. Conclusion: A Unified Framework

The Integrated Theory of Mind offers a unified conceptual framework based on the acting/perceiving subject. The model is hierarchically constructed:

  1. Meta-Functional Level (Cardinal Principles): HS and QS.
  2. Central Level (Unifying Organ): Prognostica Mens (PM) (PdM and RM).
  3. Executive Level (Circuit Logic): Operating Systems (SOA/SOC).
  4. Universal Goal: The incessant search for Dynamic Equilibrium.

This vision urges research to explore the intricate dance between prediction, perception (Cognitive Morphogenesis), and action that defines our conscious existence.
